ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Washington State men's golf team placed 11th after shooting 12-over par (300) in the final round at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, Saturday, at New Mexico's Championship Golf Club.
San Diego State won the tournament with a three-round score of 1-under par (863). The Cougars ( 36, 900)Â finished behind Colorado State ( 9, 873) in second and BYU ( 14, 878) in third. In-state rival Washington finished in fourth ( 15, 879).
"Anytime you finish the day better than started, that's a good thing," WSU Head Coach Dustin White said. "It would have been great to jump a couple more teams, but we'll learn from this and be better about it."
Junior Derek Bayley led the Cougars with a top-25 finish, tying for 22nd place, 12 strokes behind winner Blake Cannon (-6, 210) of Colorado State. Bayley had a strong first round (-3, 69) and finished the third round 4-over (76) bringing his tournament score to 222 ( 6).
WSU carded 12 birdies in the final round, including three from freshman Nicklaus Chiam. After shooting 3-over par in the first and second round, Chiam moved four spots up the leaderboard and finished the tournament tied for 34th ( 9, 225).
Highlighted by his eagle on the first hole in the final round, sophomore AJ Armstrong closed out the tournament shooting 13-over par (229) to tie for 58th.Â
Junior Zach Anderson eagled on the back nine, and shot 5-over par in the final round to finish the tournament tied for 64th ( 14, 230). Senior Nick Mandell tallied four birdies in the final round and tied for 68th ( 15, 231).
"We had spurts of good things, but we weren't able to keep them going," White said. "The effort was there, we just didn't have the result we wanted. I like the energy of the group though. We'll get back to work in Colorado."
Next up, the Cougars travel to Colorado to compete at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, Sept. 26-27, at Erie, Colorado.
