Thomson and Elling Quaintance Win Sprint at Burnaby Lake
October 07, 2017 | Rowing
Elling Quaintance won the sprint for the second-straight year.
BURNABY, British Columbia – The Washington State University women's rowing team placed three pairs in the final 250-meter sprint at the Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational, and senior Emily Thomson and sophomore Ivy Elling Quaintance won the title of Regatta Champions by winning the sprint, Saturday.
"It was a good day for racing, the rain held off until we were loading the boats," Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "This race is always a great experience. Burnaby is a great place to row and we gained some much needed race experience."Â
All eight WSU pairs were entered in the same 4,000-meter flight, and three of the duos qualified for the regatta's final 250-meter sprint, reserved for the top-six 4,000-meter finishers in each boat class.Â
WSU A pair, senior Emily Thomson and sophomore Ivy Elling Quaintance came in fourth in the pair flight of the head race, completing the 4,000-meter course at 16:37.77. The two went on to win the 250-meter sprint in front of the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club's old grandstand, with a time of 51.47. Â This marks Elling Quaintance's second-straight victory, as she teamed up with then-senior Nicole Hare last year for the sprint championship.
WSU C, senior Kristel Tohu and junior Paige Danielson also advanced to the final sprint after finishing fifth with a time of 16:40.02. They went on to place sixth in the sprint with a time of 1:01.37.
WSU B, seniors Emily Morrow and Lucie Weissova also advanced after placing sixth with a time of 16:52.86. They did not compete in the sprint due to sickness. Instead, WSU E, sophomore Kamila Ondrackova and freshman Linnea Davison, who  finished seventh at 17:08.42  went on to compete in the sprint. They finished fourth with a time of 54.50.
Shortly behind Ondrackova and Davison was WSU F, sophomore Rosalina Torcivia and junior Jess Brougham in eighth at 17:09.96.Â
WSU D, senior Jenna Kennedy and sophomore Renee Kemp clocked a time of 17:37.42, followed by WSU G, senior Emily Weible and sophomore Sue Yu at 17:50.44 and WSU H, juniors Sara Brevick and Emily Vandegrift at 19:40.52.
Washington State returns to the water for fall competition with its larger crews and coxswains, Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Head of the Spokane, hosted by Gonzaga.
