Adomaviciute, Hare Highlight Advancing Cougar Rowers at U23 and Junior Championships

Both will race in A Final action at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State rowing seniors Ieva Adomaviciute and Nicole Hare each reached the A Final in their respective events at the 2016 World Rowing Under 23 Championships, while two current and one former Cougar rower progressed this week in heats of the U23 and Junior Championships at Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Adomaviciute, a native of Kaunas, Lithuania, is rowing solo for Lithuania in the women's single sculls. In the fourth heat, Sunday, she finished just over two seconds behind first-place Canada at 7:44.530. The mark propelled Adomaviciute to the second flight of the quarterfinals, Tuesday, where she recorded the best finish of her flight, shaving tenths of a second off her opening-heat time, crossing at 7:44.290. It was the third-best finishing time of the two quarterfinal flights, and set the stage for her to out-stroke the competition and post the best time of the semifinal A/B flights at 7:33.900.
Adomaviciute will compete in the A Final of the women's single sculls, Friday, Aug. 26, and is in lane three for Lithuania. Germany, Sweden, the United States, Australia, and the Czech Republic also have sculls in the final.
Hare, having recently returned from the 2016 Olympic Games at Rio, and a native of Calgary Alberta, is teaming with Hillary Janssens in Canada's women's pair. The pair won the first heat, Sunday, edging Italy by just over a second, with a time of 7:26.170.Â
The win placed Hare and Janssens into the A Final, scheduled to race on Thursday, Aug. 25. Hare's boat will race in lane four, in-between lane-three United States, and lane-five Italy.
Junior Lucie Weissova, from Prague, Czech Republic, is representing her country as a member of the women's eight crew. In the second heat, the Czech Republic placed third in a tightly-contested race, crossing at 6:31.680. The finish took Weissova's crew to the Repechage, where it finished fifth, with a time of 6:29.120.Â

A 2016 Cougar graduate, Morgan Cathrea, also is a Canadian team member at the U23 Championships. She is competing with the women's four crew, which placed fourth in the opening heat, Sunday, rowing a time of 6:49.100. The finish sent Canada to the Repechage, where it placed third within a second of Great Britain and Belarus at 7:15.830.
Cathrea and her crew earned a spot in the B Final, Thursday, and will race out of lane three against China, Ukraine, and Poland.
Freshman Ivy Elling Quaintance is currently competing at Rotterdam in the 2016 World Rowing Junior Championships. The Sidney, British Columbia-native is teamed up with Emma Gray for the junior women's double sculls. In first-heat competition, Elling Quaintance and Gray finished just a second behind France, for third, at 7:15.830.Â
The duo is now scheduled to compete in the fourth flight of the Repechage, Friday, in lane two against Spain, Lithuania, and Austria.Â
