Captains' Corner: Maureen Perez
September 5, 2007
Well, what a week we had. Five matches in five days, that sure was tough to get through, but we came out alive!
We started out the week with a great win over Idaho in front of our fans who were awesome! Idaho is a great team and we had a blast playing them; it's always fun to play cross-town rivals. The next day we got on the bus and drove north to Spokane to play Gonzaga. It was our first away game and we were all excited. The Zags were a great team and we really pulled together to win. We went back to the hotel and got up the next morning for the seven-hour bus ride to Bozeman Montana. We got on the bus and we did a little studying and then everyone attempted to get some sleep but on a bus it is quite a challenge. Steph had to watch the movie Bend It Like Beckham for a class so we all thought we'd watch it with her on the bus and had a good laugh.
We rolled in to Bozeman at about 6:30 p.m. and had some dinner and then took some time to relax before our game the next night against Montana State. We all got up the next morning and went to a breakfast with all the teams participating and then got ready for practice. Practice was interesting because we were at a higher elevation and let's just say that some people's stomachs had a rough time adjusting :) That night we beat MSU in three and we got back to the hotel where we watched Snakes On A Plane, not one of my best decisions seeing as how I am terrified of snakes, but I found it comical. Saturday morning we suffered our first loss, to Texas A&M. It was a tough loss but we were able to come back that afternoon and beat Utah State in three games.
We began the long drive back to Pullman after our last match Saturday night. We enjoyed some great pizza and then once again tried to get some sleep but when no one could get comfortable except for Jackie who was asleep on the floor somehow, I volunteered to put in my favorite movie. I think I am the only one on the team who thinks that Almost Famous is the best movie ever made but I am blessed to have teammates who can endure my style. We all watched it and some fell asleep but we eventually made it home to Pullman. We arrived at about 2 in the morning and I have never been so excited to sleep in my bed.
It was a long week and there were some tough times but they seemed to be overshadowed by all the great times. Not many people get the luxury of traveling around with their best friends by your side, and we get to! Whether it is winning, losing, laughing, or crying were in it together no matter what.
Till next time,
