COUGAR VOLLEYBALL TRAVELS TO THE CITY BY THE BAY The Washington State University volleyball team takes its 2-1 record to San Francisco this weekend for the Powerade/Asics Challenge Tournament hosted by the University of San Francisco...Cougs meet Tulsa (1-2) Friday afternoon, UC Santa Barbara (1-1) Saturday morning, and USF (0-3) Saturday night...all matches will be played in the War Memorial Gym (capacity 5,300). TUNE IN FOR COUGAR VOLLEYBALL ON RADIO Cougar volleyball fans can listen to all the road contests during the 2010 season LIVE in the Palouse on KQQQ-AM radio (1150 on the AM dial), or Border 104 (KHTR, 104.3 on the FM dial)...veteran area broadcaster Steve Grubbs is the voice of Cougar volleyball for the sixth season...these road matches are also available for listening on the internet by purchasing a subscription through the Cougars All-Access button on the wsucougars.com website. QUITE THE OPENING ACT! The Washington State volleyball team has won its season-opening match 19 of the past 20 years...last weekend the Cougars took a 3-0 win over UC Irvine at the Nike Cougar Invitational in Pullman. LAST WEEK Three teams left the Nike Cougar Invitational with 2-1 records: WSU, Idaho and UC Irvine...Weber State went winless in three matches...Cougar Meagan Ganzer was named the tournament MVP...Oceana Bush, Rachel Todorovich, and Brittany Tillman also named to all-tourney team. ANOTHER TOUGH SCHEDULE FOR COUGS The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Div. I Coaches Top 25 Poll (Aug. 30), has seven WSU's opponents ranked in the top 25, all Pac-10 schools so the Cougs will play each twice...conference teams include No. 3 Stanford, No. 9 Washington, No. 10 USC, No. 11 California, No. 14 UCLA, No. 18 Oregon, and No. 24 Arizona... "also received votes" in the preseason poll are non-conference opponents Cal Poly (No. 29), and UC Santa Barbara (T-No. 38)...complete poll is on the second page of this release or go to www.avca.org for the weekly Coaches Top 25 poll. PALILEO NAMED 2009 PAC-10 VOLLEYBALL COACH OF THE YEAR Andrew Palileo was named Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to their first winning season since 2002, and garnering six league wins, the most since 2002...inherited a program that hadn't won more than three conference matches in a year for four consecutive seasons...mentored the Cougars to an 18-13 overall record and into the 2009 NCAA Championship Tournament...only one loss came to unranked team. COUGAR COACHING STAFF Head Coach Andrew Palileo is in his third season at WSU...returned the Cougars to the NCAA Championship tournament in his second year...Palileo has a 30-33 overall record at WSU, and a 14-year career record of 269-174...associate head coach Brian Lamppa (third season)...assistant coach Jennifer Fry (first season)...Kara Kiefer, coordinator of operations (second season)...Tina Martin, volunteer coach (second season with program).
