No. 11 Washington Volleyball Sweeps WSU

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Washington State volleyball team gave the No. 11 Huskies a scare in the first game but Washington prevailed in the match, 32-30, 30-17, 30-26, Friday night before a school-record crowd of 3,203 fans at Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmondson Pavilion.
WSU drops to 8-19 overall, 4-12 in Pac-10 play while Washington moves to 18-7 overall, 9-7 in conference action.
UW's Sanja Tomasevic led all players with 20 kills (.341) and teammate Brie Hagerty added 16 kills. Husky libero Candace Lee had 27 digs while Tomasevic had 19 digs. Setter Courtney Thompson had 53 assists.
Kristen Carlson and Zanda Bautre combined for 24 of WSU's 41 kills. Bautre also contributed 18 assists and Kali Richards had 15 assists as they shared the setting duties in place of the injured Brenn Larson. Alison Billingsley had 12 digs and Liz Spear had five blocks.
Washington raced out to an 11-point lead but watched the Cougars diminish their 23-12 advantage to just one point, 26-25. The squads traded points before Kaitlin Leck's kill and a lift ball on WSU libero Billingsley put the Dawgs serving for game point, 29-26. WSU denied the Huskies three times with kills from Bautre, Kelly Rosin and Jennifer Todd. Leck and Bautre each added a point for their teams, knotting the game at 30. Kara Bjorklund landed a kill and UW was at game point for the fifth time. Barcus' attack went into the net giving the home team the first game win, 32-30. In the opening game, WSU out-hit UW .245 to .208 and out-blocked the Huskies 3 to 0, while UW out-dug the Cougs 22 to 13.
WSU could not string together three consecutive points in the second game until they were behind 28-14. UW's Tomasevic added seven kills to her six from the first game as the Huskies hit .375 and held WSU to .064. UW won this game 30-17, and went into the break with a two-game lead.
Washington took a 21-15 lead in game two but WSU was able to close the gap to 28-25. Brie Hagerty closed out the win for the Huskies with the final two points.
Washington State wraps up the season next week with matches at Arizona State and Arizona.
