PULLMAN, Wash. -- Staci Smith had 13 kills and five blocks to lead Arizona State in a 30-27, 30-22, 31-29 defeat of Washington State in a Pac-10 volleyball match Thursday night at Bohler Gym.

Arizona State moves to a 10-13 overall record and 5-9 in Pac-10 action while WSU falls to 4-22 overall, 1-12 in conference matches.

"I think what I saw from point 1 to point 15 in game one was a group that was out there being scrappy, playing hard, playing together, and then, for whatever reason, that didn't continue throughout the rest of game one and then into the match," Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. "As good as we played against Washington, this one feels bad. A lot of it has to do with our ability to sustain and play hard and not be controlled by a situation, not get rattled. You know I could use words like mental toughness and leadership and things like that, which we need to improve upon."

ASU's Sydney Donahue had a match-high 14 digs while Colette Meek led all players with eight blocks in addition to her nine kills. Rachel Mittelstaedt recorded 38 assists and Stephanie Kohner had three aces.

WSU's Jennifer Todd and Jessie Camp each had 12 kills with Todd adding a team-high six blocks. Alison Billingsley and Stacey Holbrook combined for 25 digs and Holbrook also landed a pair of aces. Nicole Martin had 34 assists.

ASU out-blocked the Cougars 14 to 8 and hit .226 on the night while holding WSU to .113.

Washington State had lost a five-game match earlier in the season at Arizona State and were looking to avenge that loss on its home court.

"We didn't compete, they played smarter than us, and it is really disappointing," Billingsley said. "At this point it doesn't matter who we're playing, we just have to work on us."
