Cougars Sweep Oregon
Nov. 7, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State volleyball team, led by senior Zanda Bautre's triple-double, swept Oregon 30-27, 30-19, 30-27, Friday night at Bohler Gym.
WSU moves to 8-18 overall, 4-11 in Pac-10 play while Oregon falls to a 3-19 overall mark and 0-13 in conference action. This marked the 26th consecutive win over the Ducks by the Cougars and stopped a seven-match losing streak.
Bautre enjoyed her final match at Bohler Gym. The Riga, Latvia, native took over most of the setting duties as Brenn Larson sat on the bench with two sprained ankles. Baute had 23 assists and 10 kills and 10 digs.
"It feels great," Bautre said. "It was our first win in a long time and my last home game."
Cougar redshirt freshman Kristen Carlson and freshman Jennifer Todd combined for 25 kills with Todd hitting .647 and knocking down 8 blocks. Carlson added five blocks and freshman Liz Spear had five service aces.
Oregon was led by the 12 kills of Sarah Mason (.400) and seven digs of Heather Madison. WSU out-hit (50-40), out-dug (39-35), out-served (9-5) and out-blocked (11.5 - 7) the Ducks.
"I think a big difference was the blocking," Cougar Head Coach Cindy Fredrick said. "They have two really good outside hitters in Mason and (Jaclyn) Jones and I think the block was very intimidating. You put (Jen) Barcus over on the right side and that is a big front line."
The crowd ended the night chanting Bautre's name.
"It was kind of sad but it will probably hit me later on," Bautre said. "It was really nice that we won this last game. I'm thankful for the fans and everybody who kept coming to our games even when we were losing. The support was great."
Washington State travels to Seattle for its next match, Friday, Nov. 14 against the rival Washington Huskies (16-7, 7-7).
