Oregon State Sweeps WSU
Oct. 29, 2004
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Oregon State volleyball team stopped an eight-match losing streak Friday night with a 30-21, 30-27, 30-18 win over Washington State at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers, who had not won a match since the last time they defeated WSU, Oct. 1 in Pullman, moved to 9-11 overall, 3-8 in Pac-10 action. WSU, after grabbing its first conference win for first-year Head Coach Brian Heffernan Thursday night in Eugene, falls to 4-20 overall, 1-10 in conference contests.
Allison Lawrence led OSU with 14 kills as OSU had a .252 hitting percentage and held WSU to .085. Nina Baltimore led all players with 20 digs while Amanda Eggert had four blocks. Katelyn Healy added a trio of service aces.
Kelly Rosin was the sole Cougar in double-figure kills with 13. WSU out-blocked the Beavers 13 to six with Liz Spear, subbing for starting middle blocker Jennifer Todd who is in Las Vegas for a family member's funeral, led the way for WSU with six blocks. Rosin and Kristin Kelley each had five blocks and Jen Barcus added four. Nicole Martin had 28 assists.
"I thought Nicole Martin set well tonight in terms of distributing the ball and creating opportunities for our hitters to hit one-on-one," Heffernan said. "Once again we did a very nice job at the service line getting back and serving tough, and at times serving strategically, causing some problems for Oregon State's offense especially at the end of game two where we started to make a run after being down by six and coming back to lose by three. This is the second night our team blocking with Kelly Rosin leading the way, along with Liz Spear, Kristin Kelley and Jen Barcus did a really nice job."
WSU returns to Pullman to face No. 1 and undefeated Washington (19-0, 11-0) Friday night, Nov. 5, in a 7 p.m. contest at Bohler Gym.
