Volleyball Falls in Three Sets at No. 7 USC
Oct. 27, 2012
LOS ANGELES -- The Washington State volleyball team (10-14, 0-12 Pac-12) lost to the defending Pac-12 champions and No. 7-ranked USC (21-3, 9-3) in scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-18 Saturday night at the Galen Center on the USC campus.
USC's Sara Shaw led the match with 18 kills and hit an outstanding .643. Samantha Bricio added 12 kills and Natalie Hagglund had 20 digs. Hayley Crone had 30 assists as the Trojans hit .366 for the match. Alicia Ogoms led the match with three blocks.
Ver'Leea Hardaway's eight kills led the Cougars with Marcelina Glab adding seven kills and Jaicee Harris chipping in six kills. Kate Sommer had 17 digs and Camryn Irwin set 20 assists. Rachel Todorovich led the team with two blocks.
USC had commanding control of the opening set, landing 20 kills with two errors in 30 attacks for a .600 hitting percentage. Bricio and Shaw each had five kills in the set while Harris led WSU with three kills but the Cougars hit .040.
Unlike the Friday night match at No. 6 UCLA, the Cougars were not able to play a vastly improved second set, falling to the home team 25-17. USC hit .316 in this set and WSU's mistakes kept the Cougars hitting .075 and out of contention.
Down by seven points midway through the third set, the Cougars scored seven out of eight points to come within one at 16-15. WSU played the Trojans close but the deep USC bench proved too much for the visitors. USC wins the set 25-18.
"USC is a tremendous team and I don't think we came out ready to fight," Cougar Head Coach Jen Greeny said. "It's been a really tough weekend going against really great teams and we've had some sickness and injuries and without any depth, that's really tough. I thought our middles did a great job when we could get them the ball. We can work off of that. We have to get everybody healthy in the next week."
Washington State returns to Bohler Gym to host Colorado (13-10, 3-8 pending the 10/28 match vs. Oregon State), Wed., Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 TV Networks.
