No. 7 California Volleyball Defeats WSU 3-1
Oct. 23, 2003
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The California Golden Bears volleyball team, ranked seventh nationally, defeated the Washington State Cougars 30-27, 34-36, 30-23, 30-18, Thursday night at Bohler Gym.
WSU drops to 7-13 overall, 3-7 in Pac-10 matches while California moves to 17-2 overall, 8-2 in conference play.
"Every match we play now we're playing better," Cougar Head Coach Cindy Fredrick said. "Our last two hitting percentages have been our best. We just need to get rid of the stupid little mistakes we make. (Cal) is sixth (actually seventh) in the country and we're right with them and we just have to be able to take care of things at crucial times."
Cal's Mia Jerkov had match-highs with 29 kills and 20 digs. The Croatian junior hit .338 and contributed two blocks and two service aces. Camille Lefall had 13 kills, hit .522, and had eight blocks. The Bears hit .311 on the night and just edged WSU in blocking, 10 to 9.5.
Cougar senior Zanda Bautre had team-highs with 20 kills and 15 digs. Kristen Carlson added 18 kills while Jennifer Todd had 15 kills. Jen Barcus was the blocks leader with five. Setter Brenn Larson had 62 assists and 10 digs. WSU hit .251 for the match.
Of WSU's 36-34 win of the second game of the match, Fredrick said, "We played with a lot of guts. We refused to give up. But we shoot ourselves in the foot at the wrong times. What's killing us right now is defense. Defense wins games in every sport you play."
Jennifer Todd said, "I feel like the sets were really on tonight and that really helps a lot. We were communicating a lot better."
"She's talking to me so much and I feel really confident giving her the ball," Larson said. "She had 33 hits tonight so it really easy for me to give her the ball."
Washington State's takes on No. 6 Stanford (14-5, 7-3 Pac-10) Friday night at 7 p.m. in Bohler Gym. The Cardinal lost to Washington Thursday night, 3-1.
