Volleyball Falls in Three at No. 5 Oregon
Oct. 12, 2012
EUGENE -- The Washington State volleyball team (10-9, 0-7 Pac-12) lost in straight sets at No. 5 Oregon (15-1, 6-1) with scores of 25-20, 25-21, and 25-12, Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene.
Oregon was led by Alaina Bergsma's 11 kills (.435) and four blocks while Liz Brenner contributed 12 kills (.500). Haley Jacob had 12 digs and Lauren Plum had 42 assists. The Ducks hit .411 for the match.
Rachel Todorovich led WSU with 15 kills (.333) and Jaicee Harris had 10 kills and 12 digs. Camryn Irwin set up 29 assists and tallied three blocks. Ver'Leea Hardaway tagged seven kills and three blocks.
"I thought we did some good things tonight," Cougar Head Coach Jen Greeny. "Jaicee and Rachel were doing really well early and I thought our middles were doing a good job offensively. But then we had a passing breakdown where we let them run off four or five points in a row. We have to get better at not letting teams go on those runs because that absolutely killed us the last couple of matches."
The first set was knotted up six times with the last tie at 10 points but the Ducks went on a six-point swing. WSU hit an outstanding .313 with Harris landing five attacks for kills, and Oregon topped that with a .432 hitting percentage as the Ducks won the opener 25-20.
The Cougars were more competitive from the first serve of the second set, taking a 15-13 lead. The Cougars extended their lead to 17-14 when Ducks head coach Jim Moore questioned the WSU player rotation and the officials took close to five minutes to look into his concern. After that delay the Ducks out-scored WSU six to one to take a 20-18 lead. Oregon went on to win 25-21.
The third set belonged to the home with Oregon racing out to a 19-9 lead and moving toward the 25-12 win.
WSU has a day off before taking on Oregon State (12-6, 2-4 - pending the outcome of the 10/12 match vs. No. 2 Washington) for a 2 p.m. match Sunday, Oct. 14, in Corvallis.
