No. 10 UCLA Sweeps Cougar Volleyball

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The UCLA Bruins, ranked 10th nationally, defeated the Washington State volleyball team 30-19, 30-22, 30-26 in Pacific-10 Conference action Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion.
UCLA moves to 8-3, 1-1 in Pac-10, while WSU, under the direction of first-year head coach Brian Heffernan, drops to 3-11 overall, 0-2 in conference action.
UCLA's Becky Green led all players with 12 kills (.333) and five aces in addition to her 12 digs. Krystal McFarland had 37 assists while libero Chrissie Zartman had a match-high 20 digs.
WSU out-blocked the Bruins six to two but UCLA hit .242 and held WSU to .134. UCLA landed 12 aces.
WSU hit .000 and out-blocked the Bruins three to one in the first game but lost 30-19. The Cougars strung together their final four points but UCLA had four strings of four and scored seven unanswered points earlier in the game.
The Cougs kept the second game closer from the get-go and with a trio of kills from McKenzie Burgess, WSU was only down 23-19. UCLA out-scored WSU seven to three to get to the final 30-22 blue and gold win.
Capitalizing on a pair of Bruin errors and a pair of kills by Barcus, WSU came within one at 19-18. Green laced together a trio of kills while Burgess landed on to put the score at 21-19. The home team scored five unanswered points and WSU took a timeout. Barcus scored on a tip and WSU scored again when Nancy Barba's hit went long. Holbrook's ace was followed by a Barba kill and an ace by Meriwether. Todd and UCLA's Rachell Johnson traded hitting errors but Todd returned with a block to stop the Bruin's first attempt at game point. Alison Billingsley's ace made the score 29-25. Rosin added a kill for the 26th WSU point and UCLA called a timeout. Johnson hit the resounding game winner.
WSU returns to Pullman for Pac-10 action against Oregon State (7-3, 1-0) and Oregon (6-4, 0-1), Oct. 1 and 2, in Bohler Gym.
