LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Washington State volleyball team fell to the University of Southern California 30-16, 30-23, 30-25 in the opening match of Pacific-10 Conference action Friday night at USC's Lyon Center.

USC, 6-1 overall, 1-0 in Pac-10, came into the match after its only loss of the season, a 3-2 defeat by No. 16 Illinois Sept. 11. USC did not play last weekend as the Gamecock Invitational at Columbia, SC, was cancelled due the expectation of severe weather forced the teams to not travel.

WSU, under the direction of first-year head coach Brian Heffernan, drops to 3-10 overall, 0-1 in conference action.

The Women of Troy were led by 13 kills (.423), 13 digs and four blocks of Keao Burdine, and the 10 kills (.500) and three blocks of Bibiana Candelas. Using a 6-2 offense, setters Allison Dillon and Kimi Freeburg combined for 46 assists.

Jenn Todd had 10 kills (.500) and two aces for WSU. Jen Barcus added six blocks and five kills. Stacey Holbrook had 12 digs while setter Nicole Martin had 34 assists.

Early in the first game, the Women of Troy tied the game at 9-all and then laid down six unanswered points. The home-team used another run of five straight scores to cruise to a comfortable 30-16 win. USC out-hit the Cougs .571 to .029, and out-blocked WSU 6 to none.

The Cougars played better offensively and defensively in game two. WSU hit .179 and tallied five team blocks while holding USC to a .250 hitting percentage and a pair of blocks. The Cougars only allowed one four-point run and three three-point runs, including the final points in the 30-23 win by the two-time defending national champions.

Down 23-14 in the third game, WSU put out a concerted effort and closed the gap to four, down 25-21. Each team scored a trio of points when both squads committed service errors. Burdine ended the game with a kill for the 30-25 win and a 3-0 match win for USC.
