Volleyball Soundly Defeats California
Sept. 21, 2001
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State Cougar volleyball team showed no mercy in defeating the California Golden Bears 30-26, 30-14, 30-11, Friday night before 1,537 fans at Bohler Gym.
WSU moves to 6-3 overall, 1-1 in Pacific-10 Conference play while California suffered its third consecutive loss and fell to 3-4 overall, 0-2 in league action.
Cougar senior middle hitter Melissa Boyle led WSU with 13 kills, hitting an outstanding .632, and had a career-high 11 blocks. LaToya Harris, making good on her Thursday night vow to turn up her personal play a notch, did just that with 12 kills, hitting .346 and matching her career-high in blocks with 7. Senior setter Kali Surplus tallied 37 assists and had 12 digs, as did defensive specialist Kortney Jamtaas. Kerry Lewis had two service aces.
Cal was led by Leah Young's 14 kills, and the 13 digs of Reena Pardiwala. The Golden Bears hit only .015 as a team while WSU hit a season-high .343. The Cougars tallied 14 team blocks to Cal's 4 and out-served the Bears 7 to 1.
"We only had 11 errors tonight and that is so awesome," Cougar Head Coach Cindy Fredrick said. "That's what we've been working for: cutting down the errors and then to have 14 blocks. It's really fun when your players perform the way you know they can. And the way they know they can."
The first game was very competitive with the score tied at 25. Behind Zanda Bautre's serving, WSU went up 27-25 on Cal's two hitting errors. Boyle scored a kill and extended the Cougar lead to 28-25. Leah Young countered with a kill for Cal but Boyle nailed another at the net and Jamtaas scored a kill from the back row for the 30-26 win.
California could not recover and WSU marched to easy second and third game victories. Cal coach Rich Feller was given a red card during the second game and the Cougars were awarded a penalty point.
Washington State travels to Oregon and Oregon State for Pac-10 matches next Friday and Saturday.
