PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State volleyball team extended its win-steak to four matches and will share the Pac-10 Conference lead with a 2-0 record after the Cougars defeated Arizona State at Bohler Gym Friday night.

The WSU home court crowd of 1,339 fans watched as the freshman-dominated crimson and gray team powered its way to a 30-25, 33-31, 36-34, win over the Sun Devils. WSU is now 5-6 overall and 2-0 in league play while ASU is 5-6 but 0-2 in conference action.

"You could tell tonight that our bodies were kind of tired," WSU Head Coach Cindy Fredrick said. "They out-hit us by a lot and we did not hit well but they played great defense so it was hard to put the ball away. We made up for it with good blocking and a lot less service errors."

Blocking was one of the keys to the Cougars' success as freshmen Jennifer Todd had 10, Kelly Rosin had seven and redshirt freshmen Jen Barcus had six and Kristen Carlson contributed four. Carlson was the WSU kills leader with 10. Brenn Larson had 27 assists and 11 digs, while Alison Billingsley had 14 digs.

ASU had four players with double-figure kills led by Sarah Watkins' 15. Cheryl Anglin had 42 assists and 12 digs and Juliana Escobar added 14 kills and 17 digs. Watkins had a team-high three aces.

The Sun Devils hit .203 and kept WSU to a .129 hitting percentage with 58 kills for ASU and 36 for WSU, and out-dug the Cougars 75 to 55. But ASU committed 28 service errors and the Cougars had the blocking advantage, 16 to 8.

"I feel myself being more consistent," Carlson said. "I started talking to myself at the end of the game saying, 'reach for the ball,' because I was doing what I used to do last year, just hitting anywhere."

Carlson has been the Cougars' kills leader in the last three matches.

Washington State will return to action Thursday night against No. 12 California at Berkeley, and take on No. 4 Stanford Friday night at Stanford.
