WSU Volleyball Upsets No. 22 Loyola Marymount 3-1

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State came in second at the Cougar Mania Volleyball Tournament but after scoring a pair of wins Saturday at Bohler Gym, the Cougars felt like champions. WSU handed No. 22 Loyola Marymount its first defeat in 11 matches this season in the final tournament match. The Cougars defeated the Lions 30-28, 30-21, 26-30, 32-30. In the earlier evening match, Saint Louis defeated New Mexico 30-27, 30-21, 24-30, 30-28. LMU (10-1), SLU (5-7) and WSU (3-6) all ended with 2-1 records but based on head-to-head games won, Loyola Marymount won the tournament and WSU was second with SLU third. New Mexico (3-6) went 0-3 in the two-day tourney. In the LMU match, WSU's Zanda Bautre, Kristen Carlson and Jennifer Todd, all-tournament selections, combined for 40 kills. Todd added nine blocks and Bautre had 21 digs and 34 assists. Jen Barcus had a match-high 10- blocks. Cougar Mania MVP, Kealani Kimball tallied 22 kills and 25 digs for LMU. Dina DeBernardi added 14 kills and was named to the all-tourney team. Washington State out-blocked LMU 19 to 11 and held the Lions to .179 hitting percentage for the match. "This was an incredibly well-balanced team today. I think they grew up right before everybody's eyes and figured out just how good they are," Cougar Head Coach Cindy Fredrick said. "They showed a lot of great hitting and a lot of great blocking." In the first match Saturday night, Saint Louis' Ashley Hunter had 14 kills and 15 digs to lead the Billikens to the 3-1 win over New Mexico. Anna Reines had 23 kills for the Lobos.
In the early matches Saturday, Kimball had 16 kills to lead Loyola Marymount to a 30-13, 30-27, 32-30, win over Saint Louis. Courtnay Leonard added 14 digs and DeBernardi added three aces and four blocks to the Lions win. The Billikens were led by Ashley Hunter's nine kills and 12 digs. LMU hit .336 and held SLU to .150.
Washington State grabbed its second win of the season with a 30-25, 30-21, 30-22, win over New Mexico. Jen Barcus led the WSU efforts with 10 kills, three aces and eight blocks. Cougar senior Zanda Bautre added 14 kills and 10 digs while Kristen Carlson had nine kills and 13 digs. New Mexico's Anna Reines had 10 kills and Ada Burke had 13 digs. Chelsea Sondrup had a match-high four aces. The Cougars out-blocked the Lobos 11 to 2 and WSU had its best hitting percentage of the season at .298, holding UNM to .082. The Cougars will have a short week as Pacific-10 Conference action begins Thursday with Arizona coming to Pullman, followed by a Friday night visit from Arizona State.
