Utah Valley State Defeats WSU Volleyball 3-2

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Another match, another five-games for the Washington State Cougars and the fourth five-game loss of the season. Utah Valley State, a first-year NCAA Division I school, defeated UVSC 30-26, 23-30, 30-32, 30-16, 15-11 Saturday night at the Utah Hampton Inn Classic Tournament.
Washington State drops to a record of 1-5 while Utah Valley State moves to 2-5 on the season.
Kassidy Brotherson lead the Wolverines with 16 kills and 10 blocks while Alina Wallauer added 14 kills and 19 digs. USVC hit .136 and held WSU to .073 in addition to out-blocking the Cougs 18 to 10.
The Wolverines jumped out to the lead in the first game and the Cougars could only get within two points. WSU hit -.047 to UVSC's .146 and the Cougs had eight service errors. USVC out-blocked WSU 7 to 2.
The Cougars lead the second game from an eight-all tie and out-scored Utah Valley State five to one to get the 30-23 win. WSU hit .294 in the second game while holding UVSC to .000 hitting percentage.
Utah Valley State had a 25-18 lead in the third game when Washington State went on an 11-3 run and was serving for the game. A kill from Kassidy Brotherson tied the game at 29. Bautre countered with a kill but Brotherson stopped the second attempt at game point, knotting up the contest at 30. Jen Barcus came back with a soft tip and Kelly Rosin aced the serve to give the Cougars the 32-30 win.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the fourth game and never looked back, winning 30-16. The fifth game stayed close but the momentum was without a doubt on the UVSC side as they extended a two-point lead to a 15-11 win.
Earlier in the day, Utah defeated Utah Valley State 30-19, 30-20, 30-21.
Washington State returns to Pullman for next weekend's Cougar Mania Invitational, taking on Loyola Marymount, Saint Louis and New Mexico competing.
