Pat Stangle joined the Cougar volleyball program coaching staff in April 2011 and hit the recruiting trail hard and often. But that is not a new experience for the highly valued veteran of collegiate volleyball. "Pat brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to WSU Volleyball," Cougar Head Coach Jen Greeny said. "His values and hard work shine through and we are excited to have him join the Cougar Volleyball family. Pat is very well-respected by high school, club, and college coaches throughout the country." Stangle was the head coach at the University of Wyoming from 2004 through 2007, and had a record of 50-59. He guided the Cowgirls to a 26-36 record in the highly-competitive Mountain West Conference with fifth-place (of nine team) finishes in 2004 and 2006, the highest league finishes in the history of the program in the MWC. Prior to Wyoming, he was the top assistant coach for Jim McLaughlin at the University of Washington from 2002-03, and was instrumental in the Huskies' 43-20 overall record and 19-17 Pacific-10 Conference record. The 2003 Dawgs finished 23-9 overall and 10-8 in the conference and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championship Tournament. Stangle worked with the offense and was the Huskies' recruiting coordinator, enticing the core of the Washington players who competed in a long line of NCAA Volleyball Championship tournaments including the Husky team that was crowned the NCAA Division I Champions in 2005. After two successful coaching stints in junior colleges, Stangle was selected to the NJCAA Volleyball Hall of Fame. From 1997 through 2001, Stangle coached at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas, where the Lady Saints were 225-34 in five seasons. He led the volleyball team to two Jayhawk Conference championships, three straight NJCAA Region VI titles from 1999 through 2001, and mentored the team to three appearances in the NJCAA National Championships. Stangle earned conference and district Coach-of-the-Year honors and coached 18 NJCAA All-Region players and six NJCAA All-Americans. Stangle began his coaching career as the head coach at Central College in McPherson, Kansas, leading the team to the school's first regional tournament appearance and returned to the regional tourney the following year. Stangle, 47, is originally from Spokane, Wash., where he played basketball at Northwest Christian High School for Cougar Head Coach Jen Greeny's father, Jim Stinson. He went on to play middle blocker on the Hardin-Simmons University (Abilene, Texas) men's volleyball team that participated in the 1986 NCAA DI Midwest Regional Championships. Stangle earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1988 from Hardin-Simmons and went on to earn his MBA in 1993 from the University of Texas-San Antonio. From 2008-2011 Stangle coached for the prestigious Alamo Volleyball Association in San Antonio, Texas. He and his wife, Melissa, have two sons, Casey and Doak, and one daughter, Haley.
