Tennis To Host 2012 Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash. - THIS WEEK: The Washington State University women's tennis team opens its 2012-13 season in Pullman with the Cougar Classic, Sept. 14-16 at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. WSU will be competing against 10 other teams including; Boise State, Gonzaga, Portland, Eastern Washington, Montana, Montana State, Seattle, Lewis-Clark State, Lewis and Clark, and Idaho.
VASILIEVA GARNERS PRESEASON RANKING: Senior Liudmila Vasilieva received a preseason national ranking of 33 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. In 2012, the Yekaterinburg, Russia native posted a 32-9 record, the second-most single-season wins in school history, along with a 19-7 record in dual match play. In addition to reaching the NCAA Singles Championship for the second time in her career (2010), Vasilieva received second-team All-Pac-12 honors while leading the Cougars to the NCAA Team Championship for the first time since 2008.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: This years Cougar tennis team includes four seniors: Liudmila Vasilieva, Ksenia Googe, Andjela Kankaras, Erin Troedson, one junior, Olga Musilovich, two sophomores, Elizaveta Luzina and Charlotte Koning, and freshman Lize Leenknecht.
FALL SCHEDULE: After the Cougar Classic, Liudmila Vasilieva will compete in the ITA All-American Invitational, October 2-7 in Pacific Palisades, Calif. With the Cougars then competing in the Air Force Invitational, October 5-7 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Cougars will wrap up fall competition with the ITA Regional in Stanford, Calif., October 19-23.
2012 RECAP: The Cougar tennis team finished the 2011-12 season with 19-7 record and a second-round showing at the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship. Last season's highlights included wins over six nationally-ranked teams, a first-round victory over No. 36 Florida State at the NCAA Championship, a weekend sweep over No. 26 Arizona and No. 27 Arizona State, the first time that has occurred in school history, and the first win over Arizona State in 19 matches. The Cougars also posted six conference victories, more than any previous WSU team, and finished fifth in the Pac-12 Conference.
CLIMBING THE CAREER CHARTS: Liudmila Vasilieva is currently No. 4 on WSU's career singles wins list with 82. Ksenia Googe is three wins away from becoming No. 10 with 72 while Andjela Kankaras is nine wins shy with 66.
COACH HART: Washington State's Lisa Hart is in her 10th season as head coach of the Cougars. Hart's overall record at WSU is 109-110. Hart was named the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Region Coach of the Year, adding to a stellar season in which she was named the Pac-12 Conference Coach of the Year while guiding the Cougars to the 2012 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.
