WSU Tennis Earns Team and Individual ITA Academic Awards

Sept. 1, 2009

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State women's tennis team has been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for their academic achievements during the 2008-2009 season. Elisabeth Fournier, Jessica Gomez and Bianca Selaru were also honored by the ITA as individual Scholar-Athletes.

The Cougs maintained a 3.32 team grade point average for the 2008-09 season. The ITA Academic Award is open to any ITA team with a 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA.

"It is always rewarding to be recognized for our efforts in the classroom as well as on the tennis courts," said WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart. "Last season our team set a very high bar academically and honors such as these support those goals."

Elisabeth Fournier, interested in an economics degree, earned a 3.82 grade point average during her freshman year. Jessica Gomez, a management information systems and accounting information systems major, maintained a 3.56 GPA during her sophomore campaign. Bianca Selaru, who graduated last May with a humanities degree, was recognized for the second time as an ITA Scholar-Athlete with a 3.22 cumulative GPA for her senior season.

To be recognized as an ITA Scholar-Athlete, student-athletes must be a varsity letter winner, maintain a 3.5 GPA during the current season, and have been enrolled in their present school for at least two semesters.
