WSU Tennis Heads To Seattle For Three Dual Matches

Jan. 29, 2002

The Washington State women's tennis team faces some familiar foes this weekend when they travel to Seattle for the first three dual matches of the season. The Cougars, ranked 28th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason rankings, will face Alabama (ranked No. 28), Washington (No. 12) and San Diego State (No. 44).

"This weekend will be three very tough matches," coach Cari Groce said. "I feel good about where we are at as a team. We have good leadership from our returnees, and our younger players are getting better daily. We are going to be very performance orientated and will try to go the distance this weekend."

The Cougars are anchored by Erica Perkins, a senior ranked 38th, and Stacy McKenna, a sophomore ranked 50th nationally. Combined they form the No. 22 doubles team.

The ITA ranked McKenna ninth in the Northwest region. Perkins is ranked 12th, while Lorena Arias is ranked 29th in the region. McKenna and Perkins form the sixth-ranked team in the region. Arias and doubles partner Chris Martinez are ranked 12th. Sophomore Zorana Roganovic and freshman Zsofi Fodor are tied for 14th for this region.

The Cougars next competition will be against the Oregon Ducks February 24 in Lewiston.
