Cougars Open with Purdue at ITA Team Indoors

THIS WEEK: The Washington State University women's tennis team travels to Evanston, Ill. to compete in the 2013 ITA Kick-Off Weekend Jan. 25-26. WSU will open against No. 26 Purdue Boilermakers Friday. If WSU wins, then they will play the winner of Arkansas/Northwestern to play Saturday for a berth in the 2013 ITA National Women's Indoor Championships. ABOUT PURDUE: The Boilermakers enter the tournament ranked No. 26 according to the ITA. Purdue has two players nationally ranked; Lynda Xepoleas at No. 80 and Mara Schmidt at No. 108. Purdue heads into the 2013 ITA Kick-Off Weekend after a dominating performance at the Purdue Invite tournament against No. 65 DePaul and Illinois-Chicago. ABOUT ARKANSAS/NORTHWESTERN: No. 38 Arkansas comes into the weekend with a 3-0 record. The Razorbacks have swept all three wins this year 7-0. No. 14 Northwestern enters the tournament following strong showings against No. 34 Utah and No. 13 Virginia at the Virginia Winter Invite. The Wildcats Katy Turvey is ranked No. 67 according to ITA and just defeated No. 4 Julia Elbaba at the tournament last weekend. RECAP OF LAST WEEKEND: The Cougars won all three matches over the weekend to open their. WSU began the weekend Saturday morning against Portland State. After earning the doubles point, the Cougars swept the first four single matches in straight sets en route to a 5-2 victory. The Cougars won against Idaho later that day, sweeping the Vandals 7-0. Sunday morning the Cougars defeated No. 61 Wyoming 5-2. Ksenia Googe, at No. 3 singles, sparked the Cougars after a comeback victory in which she won the final six games in the third set to give WSU a 3-2 lead en route to the victory. LUZINA NAMED WSU STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Sophomore Elizaveta Luzina was named the female WSU Student-Athlete of the Week after winning all three of her singles matches and her only doubles match over the weekend. WSU RANKED No. 32: In the most recent polls, the WSU women's tennis team garnered the No. 32 ITA national ranking. This is the same ranking that the Cougars finished with at the end of the 2011-2012 season, finishing the season with a 19-7 record. REGIONAL RANKINGS: Vasilieva garnered the No. 13 regional ranking while the pairing of Kankaras and Googe received the No. 10 regional ranking for doubles teams. COACH HART: Lisa Hart enters her 10th season as the head coach of Washington State. Hart has accumulated 112 wins over her tenure, recording a 19-7 record along with a trip to the NCAA Championships in the 2011-12 season. Hart was awarded the PAC-12 Conference Women's Tennis Coach of the year award for the 2011-12 season.
CLIMBING THE CAREER CHARTS: Senior Liudmila Vasilieva is currently ranked No. 2 on WSU's career singles wins list with 95. Vasilieva needs 14 wins to surpass Elisabeth Fournier to become WSU's singles wins list leader. Senior Ksenia Googe moves up to No.5 on the all-time wins list with 81 and senior Andjela Kankaras moves into a three-way-tie for eighth with 76 victories.
