Perkins And McKenna Both Win First Round Matches

Seattle, Wash.--Ranked players Erica Perkins and Stacy McKenna both went 1-1 in the Flight I singles bracket at the Pacific-10 Championships played at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.

Perkins, ranked 38th nationally, defeated USC's Maureen Diaz 6-3, 6-2. In the second round, Perkins fell to Stanford's Lauren Barnikow in two sets, 5-7, 2-6.

McKenna, ranked No. 50, beat Arizona State's Cindy Sureephong 6-4, 6-2. In second round action, McKenna was outlasted by USC's Jewel Peterson 4-6, 5-7. Peterson is a No. 2 seed in the tournament.

"This is the best tournament in the country to get our players back on track after the holidays," said WSU Coach Cari Groce. "We competed against some of the best players in the country."

Cougars Chris Martinez, Lorena Arias and Zorana Roganovic were all defeated in first round action.

The three day competition continues Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. There are four singles brackets and three doubles flights. The top three singles flights will include a consolation bracket.

Singles-- Flight I-- First Round Erica Perkins (WSU) def. Maureen Diaz (USC) 6-3, 6-2 Stacy McKenna (WSU) def. Cindy Sureephong (ASU) 6-4, 6-2

Singles-- Flight I-- Quarterfinals Lauren Barnikow (Stan) def. Perkins (WSU) 5-7, 2-6 Jewel Peterson (USC) def. McKenna (WSU) 4-6, 5-7

Singles -- Flight II-- First Round Ilona Koedonskaya (Wash) def. Chris Martinez (WSU) 2-6, 3-6 Emalia Anderson (Stan) def. Lorena Arias (WSU) 2-6, 4-6

Singles --Flight III-- First Round Carla Arguelles (Cal) def. Zorana Roganovic (WSU) 3-6, 0-6
