Jan. 9, 2007

PULLMAN, Wash. - Seniors Amy Toth and Marjolein van de Ven and 2006 NCAA Singles Championship participant, Ekaterina Burduli, earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northwest Region rankings, it was announced recently.

"It's exciting to have three players ranked in the Northwest Region after a strong fall," WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "As the season begins, we will look to these three to give guidance and leadership."

Burduli earned a regional ranking of 17 after finishing the 2006 fall season with a 10-3 record. The Tel Aviv, Israel native captured the BYU Invitational title (Flight A) after defeating third-seeded Lauren Jones of BYU, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. Burduli reached the round of 16 at the ITA Northwest Regional, but fell No. 56 Cristina Visicio, 7-6, 6-2. Burduli competed against five nationally-ranked opponents and defeated two of them (Petra Dizdar No. 77 Texas, Taryn Rudman No. 74 Georgia Tech).

Toth, ranked 23rd, finished the fall season with a record of 4-7. A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Toth reached the quarterfinals at the BYU Invitational (Flight A) but fell to the third-seed Lauren Jones, 6-4, 6-1. She earned a spot at the ITA All-American Prequalifying Draw where she faced No. 94 Anastasia Zhukoya of Tennessee at Chattanooga, but fell, 6-0, 6-2.

Delft, Netherlands native, van de Ven, finished fall play with a 7-3 record, which earned her a 26th spot on the regional poll. She reached the quarterfinal at the BYU Invitational (Flight A), but lost to the second-seed and the 79th nationally-ranked Liz Ferris of Utah, 6-1, 6-4.

The Cougars will defend their rankings when they open 2007 dual match play against in-state rivals Gonzaga and Eastern Washington, Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007.
