Cougar Singles Produce Two Victories To End Tournament

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Washington State women's tennis team captured two singles triumphs the final day of the University of North Carolina Kitty Harrison Invitational Sunday.

In singles play the Cougars faced Virginia Tech. In the No. 2 position, sophomore Amy Toth took her match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 against J.J. Larson. The victory for Toth gives her six wins this season. Also finding success was Cougar senior Orsolya Sallai playing in No. 3 singles. Sallai put down her opponent, Jessica Long, by a score of 6-1, 6-4. With that triumph, Sallai moved her win total to eight this season.

In No. 1 singles, Nora Gaal faced No. 73 Anat Elazari. The match was taken by the Hokie with a score of 6-2, 6-1. Rounding out Cougar singles competition was senior Chris Martinez who fell to Ashley James, 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 4 slot.

Washington State faltered in both doubles matches against Miami (Fla.). Martinez/Sallai were put down by Melissa Applebaum/Caren Seenauth 8-4 and Gaal/Toth were knocked off by Staci Stevens/Emily Mowery 8-2.

"This was a great tournament for our team," WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "We are very excited about starting our dual matches in January."

The Cougars will get a break before beginning dual match play Jan. 21 against Brigham Young in Utah.
