Cougars Come Up Short In Quarterfinals At ITA Regional

Stanford, Calif.-- Washington State's fifth-seeded doubles tandem of Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez lost Saturday in the doubles quarterfinals at the Omni Hotels Western Regional Championships hosted by Stanford University.

Arias and Martinez lost to Washington's third-seeded Claire Carter/Darija Klaic duo, 9-7.

Arias and Martinez beat Santa Clara's Ashley Campbell and Jenny Siegel duo, 8-2, Saturday to advance to the quarterfinal.

In singles consolation fourth round action, WSU sophomore Orsolya Sallai defeated Idaho's Sunel Nieuwoudt, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5. In the consolation quarterfinal, Sallai was edged by Stanford's Story Tweedie-Yates, 6-3, 7-6(4)

"This is what our players have played for all fall," said WSU Tennis Coach Cari Groce. "This regional is packed with some of the best players in the country."

The four-day tournament features the top women's players from the ITA's western region at the NCAA Division I level. Participating schools for this year's event include: Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara, as well as Pac-10 foes California, Oregon, Washington and Stanford. The singles finalists and doubles champions advance to the 2002 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held Nov. 7-10 in Dallas, Texas.
