Stanford, Calif.-- The Washington State women's tennis team, led by 14th-seeded Lorena Arias, had four players go undefeated during the first day of competition at the Omni Hotels Western Regional Championships hosted by Stanford University.

Arias, a junior from Mexico, advanced with a bye in the first round and beat Stanford's Kara Guzman 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. Arias will play Fresno State's Courtney Jantz Saturday in the round of 32.

Also advancing to the round of 32 were Cougar sophomores Nora Gaal, Chris Martinez and Zsofi Fodor. In second round play, Gaal beat St. Mary's Lindsay Herndon Ortega 7-6(6), 6-2. Martinez defeated Cal Poly's Samantha Waller 7-5, 6-3 in her second round match. Fodor edged California's Kristen Case 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the round of 32.

"This is what our players have played for all fall," said WSU Tennis Coach Cari Groce. "This regional is packed with some of the best players in the country."

The four-day tournament features the top women's players from the ITA's western region at the NCAA Division I level. Participating schools for this year's event include: Fresno State, Gonzaga, Idaho, Nevada, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara, as well as Pac-10 foes California, Oregon, Washington and Stanford.
