COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Senior Liudmila Vasilieva captured her second tournament title of the fall season as she won the Flight A title at the Air Force Invitational Sunday afternoon.
Vasilieva, who improved to 9-2 this fall, swept all three of her matches this weekend in straight sets, defeating Oklahoma State's Meghan Blevins 7-6, 6-0 for the championship. Earlier Sunday Vasilieva defeated Denver's Sophia Bergner, 6-1, 6-1 to reach the title match.
In the B Flight, senior Andjela Kankaras, who needed three sets to advance in each of her first two rounds, fell in her semifinal match to Eastern Michigan's Klara Supejova, 6-3, 6-1, in her only match of the day. In Flight C, senior Ksenia Googe won a first-set tiebreak, but could not close out the match as she fell to Illinois' Julia Jamieson, 6-7, 6-4, 10-7 in the semifinal. Googe then dropped the third-place match to Eastern Michigan's Nino Mebuke, 6-2, 6-0, before ending her tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Air Force's Natasha Rizvi.
In Flight D, sophomore Elizaveta Luzina defeated Wyoming's Jessica Parizher, 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinal before falling to Texas Tech's Liz Ullathorne, 6-3, 7-5, in the title match. Luzina's teammate, sophomore Charlotte Koning, went three sets in her championship match, but came up just short as she dropped a 6-1, 1-6, 10-8 decision to Wyoming's Alma Espinosa. Koning later defeated Northern Colorado's Jenn Buchanan, 6-1, 6-4, to close out her tournament.
Freshman Liza Leenknecht, playing in the backdraw, fell to Denver's Emma Isberg, 6-3, 6-2, while teammate Erin Troedson came up just shy to Mollie Cooper of Colorado State, 7-6, 6-7, 10-6.
