Oct. 3, 2008
BOISE, Idaho - The Washington State University women's tennis team captured six of seven singles matches to end the first day of play at the 2008 Jack Taylor Classic, hosted by Boise State University at the Appleton Tennis Center.
The four-team tournament features Washington State, New Mexico, Utah and host Boise State, with teams facing off with doubles matches against one school followed by singles matches later that day against another university.
"We got off to a little slow start in doubles," said WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart. "But to come back in the afternoon and take six singles matches was a positive way to end the first day."
The Cougars began the day facing Boise State in doubles, with the Broncos taking all three matches. Lauren Megale and Klaudia Wlodarczyk defeated Ekaterina Kamendova and Alexandra Oprea 8-4, while Jana Mackova and Vivien Silfany posted an 8-0 win over Jessica Gomez and Marina Nicolas. The final match saw Bianca Jochimsen and Laura Baum get by Elisabeth Fournier and Aleksandra Cekic 8-5.
It was a different result in the afternoon as WSU took six of seven matches against New Mexico in singles. Kamendova highlighted the afternoon with a 6-1, 0-6, 6-1 victory over Ola Abou-Zekry, who was ranked No. 103 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason rankings. Oprea took the second set against Mackenzie White before falling in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
The final five matches went the way of the Cougars as Nicolas defeated Victoria Tessmar, 6-1, 6-2, Fournier rallied from a set down to defeat Emma Hayman 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, and Cekic needed a first-set tiebreak to defeat Maria Sotirchos, 7-6, 6-2.
Gomez cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 straight-set win over Anya Villanueva-Forte while Bianca Selaru was pushed to the limit before defeating Manumea Durie, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.
The Cougars will continue play Saturday at the Jack Taylor Classic as they face Boise State in doubles followed by singles matches against Utah.
