Tennis Soars at Day One of Air Force Invitational

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Washington State women's tennis team posted six singles victories and swept five doubles matches during the first round of the United States Air Force Academy Invitational, Friday. Lorena Arias and Nora Gaal each posted wins in flight one singles. Arias defeated Kendall Exelby of UTEP, 6-3, 7-6. Gaal, coming off a singles championship at last week's Cougar Classic in Pullman, disposed of Air Force's Kami Miller, 6-0, 6-4. Also earning singles wins for WSU were Chris Martinez in flight two as well as Orsi Sallai, Zsofi Fodor and Zorana Roganovic in flight three. Martinez defeated Wyoming's Patricia Chien, 6-2, 6-3. Sallai, who also won a singles title at the Cougar Classic last weekend, knocked off Denver's Maru Altamirano, 6-1, 6-2 while Fodor recorded a 6-1, ret., win against Colorado's Lauren Carey. Roganovic added a 6-0, 6-2 win over Dani Martinez of Northern Illinois. In doubles action, Cougar tandems of Arias and Martinez as well as Gaal and Fodor advanced to the semifinals of flight one with a pair of victories. Arias and Martinez defeated Exelby and Danielle King of UTEP 8-2 and squeaked by Branka Savic and Erica Heshelman of Northern Illinois 9-7. Gaal and Fodor advanced with an 8-3 win over Wyoming's Jennifer Hancock and Yuliani Santi and an 8-2 victory over Colorado's Dominique Lemperle and Lia Dimingo. Arias and Martinez will face Kati Gyulai and Chien of Wyoming in one semifinal. Gaal and Fodor square off against Laura Nigro and Gina Black of Air Force in the other semifinal.
In flight two doubles, Sallai and Melanie Humphrey defeated Martinez and Kristi McIntyre of Northern Illinois 8-2 to advance to the semifinals. WSU's Zorana Roganovic teamed with Wyoming's Megan Williams to knock off Jenny Hanson and Susan Johnson of Colorado 8-6. The two teams will meet in the semifinals Saturday.
