WSU Wraps Up Cougar Classic

PULLMAN, Wash.-- The WSU women's tennis team wrapped up the final day of competition at the Cougar Classic at the WSU Outdoor Courts on Sunday, coming away with a doubles and singles championship. Marina Nicolas won her fourth consecutive Cougar Classic title by defeating Yvette Ly of Idaho 6-3, 6-2 for the Gray singles championship. Earlier in the day, Nicolas captured a semifinal win over Sarah Cassman of Air Force 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Nicolas' teammate, Jessica Gomez, lost her semifinal match to Ly 6-3, 6-0. In the Gray singles consolation brackets, Lea Jansen beat Sarah Lucas of Seattle 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 in the second round. In the third round bracket, Jackie Owens beat Madeline Parker of Gonzaga 6-1, 6-2. Erin Troedson fell to Megumi Voight of Air Force in fourth round consolation 6-0, 6-2. Ksenia Googe finished as a runner-up the Crimson singles to Elyse Edwards of Boise State 6-4, 6-2. Earlier in the morning Googe beat Sonia Klamczyska of Boise State 7-5, 6-0 to advance to the championship match. In Crimson consolation play, Olga Musilovich won her morning match against Rika Mehndiratta 6-0, 6-0. Andjela Kankaras and Elisabeth Fournier faced each other in a third round consolation match, with Fournier coming out on top 6-3. Liudmila Vasilieva won her fourth round consolation match against Heather Davidson of Montana 6-4, 6-0. "This is Marina's fourth Cougar Classic championship in four years,"said WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart. "There were a lot of positives to take from this weekend... it's something to build on."
