ATHENS, Ga. - Washington State junior Liudmila Vasilieva saw her season come to end today in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Singles Championship, being played at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Vasilieva, a junior from Yekaterinburg, Russia, fell to Miami's Anna Bartenstein, 6-3, 6-1. After trailing 3-1 in the opening set, Vasilieva used a break of serve to tie the match a 3-3 before Bartenstein captured the next three games to close out the set. The second set proved much of the same as each game was close with Bartenstein coming up with big shots at key times.

"Luda had some chances early but her opponent just played well on the big points," said WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart.

Bartenstein entered the match with a national ranking of 18 and improved to 24-11 this season against ranked players. Vasilieva is currently ranked No. 51 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association while defeating four players who are currently ranked nationally, including No. 14 Zoe Scandalis of USC.

"I'm very proud of all Luda accomplished this season," said Hart. "She has made huge strides each year she has been in Pullman and this year established herself as one of the elite players in college tennis. I know she will be more determined to come back next year and build on this year's success."

Vasilieva ends her 2012 campaign with a 32-9 record; the second-most single-season wins in school history. In addition to reaching the NCAA Singles Championship for the second time in her career (2010), Vasilieva received second-team All-Pac-12 honors while leading the Cougars to the NCAA Team Championship for the first time since 2008.
