Cougars Earn Five Victories in First Day of Pac-10 Championships/Invitational

OJAI, Calif. - The Washington State Cougar tennis team posted five wins in the first, second and back draw rounds of the Pacific-10 Championships/Invitational in Ojai, Calif., Thursday.

In the first round of championship singles junior Orsolya Sallai stood out for the Cougars as she captured a victory over Arizona State's Lauren Colalillo, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6. Sallai advanced to the second round and was put down by No. 3 Raquel Kops-Jones of California, 6-2, 6-1.

Cougar Zsofia Fodor also found success in the first round of invitational play as she defeated Washington's Cheryl Naruse in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Fodor captured her near flawless second round win against another Washington player Megan Flynn, 6-1, 6-0. Fodor will face Joanna Kao of Stanford in the quarterfinal round Friday, beginning at noon.

"We're excited for Zsofia to be in the quarterfinals," Washington State Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "She played really hard and I know she'll carry that fight into her match Friday."

Both Lorena Arias and Zorana Roganovic found success in the back draw matches of their respective brackets. In the championship back draw Arias knocked off Arizona's Debbie Larocque 6-4, 6-3, while Roganovic earned her victory over Rebecca Rankin of Arizona State by a score of 7-5, 6-4 in the back draw of the invitational bracket.

In addition to the continuance of singles play, doubles play will also begin on Friday. In the first round of championship doubles Cougars Arias and Chris Martinez will look to capture career win number 45 to share the record for career doubles wins in the Cougar record books. The WSU pair will face UCLA's Jackie Carleton and Laura Gordon in a match set to begin at 10:30 a.m.

 

 

In invitational doubles play Cougars Sallai and Fodor will take on Stanford's Kao and Jessica Leck at 9 a.m. Nelly Dvornicka and Roganovic will team up for the sixth time this season and face Jessica Shu and Monica Wiesener of California at 10:30 a.m., while Nora Gaal and Amy Toth will square off against Mugette Ahn and Saskia Nauenberg of Washington also at 10:30.

"We're anxious to start doubles play tomorrow," Coach Hart said. "We're prepared to compete hard."
