Cougar Tennis Ends Season With Loss

SPOKANE, Wash. - In their final dual match of the season the Washington State Cougars were overcome by the No. 29 Oregon Ducks 6-1 in Spokane at the North Park Racquet Club. The match had to be moved indoors due to inclement weather in Pullman.

The match lasted over five hours with four singles matches being drawn into three sets.

The Cougars (9-14, 0-8 Pac-10) took one doubles and one singles win away from the Ducks who boasted three ranked singles players and a ranked doubles team.

Sealing the lone singles win for the Cougs was sophomore Amy Toth who put down Anna Leksinska, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9) at the No. 5 position.

The doubles victory came from the No. 2 position for the Cougars. Ekaterina Burduli/Nora Gaal put down Leksinska/Jamie Marshall 9-7. At No. 1 doubles Orsolya Sallai/Chris Martinez came within two of the 54th-ranked Duck pair Daria Panova/Dominika Dieskova, the final score read 8-6.

In the No. 1 singles position, No. 71 Burduli fell to No. 49 Daria Panova 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Seniors Sallai and Martinez also fell to their ranked foes. Sallai was knocked off by No. 67 Dominika Dieskova, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot, while Martinez lost in three sets to No. 81 Davina Mendiburu, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 position.

Gaal took Marshall to threesets and couldn't hang on as she fell in No. 4 singles to Marshall, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

"We lost three, three set matches today so we were close," Washington State head coach Lisa Hart said. "We are looking forward to the Pac-10 Championships next week in Ojai (California)."

The Pac-10 Championships/Invitational begins Thursday, April 21st in Ojai, Calif.
