Huskies Knock Off Cougars

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington won five of six singles matches and defeated host Washington State, 6-1 in Pacific-10 women's tennis action, Friday. The No. 66 Cougars (5-15, 1-7 Pac-10) won at the No. 5 singles position where Amy Toth defeated Saskia Nauenberg, 6-4, 6-4. The doubles competition was close and came down the No. 2 position where WSU's Lorena Arias and Zsofia Fodor faced Dinka Hadzic and Erin Hoe. The match was tied, 5-5, 6-6, and 7-7 before Hadzic and Hoe captured a pair of games to earn a 9-7 win and the doubles point for the No. 8 Huskies (18-5, 5-3 Pac-10). "This was a big improvement for us from the last time we played Washington (March 7)," WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "This gives us a lot to build on for next season. All five of Washington's victories in singles play came via straight sets. Washington won at positions 1-4 and No. 6 led by Dea Sumantri's victory over Lorena Arias at the No. 1 position. Sumantri, ranked 20th nationally, defeated Arias, 6-4, 6-4.
