No. 12 Sun Devils Beat No. 42 Cougar Tennis, 4-1

April 5, 2003

LEWISTON, Idaho -- The Washington State tennis team lost to the No. 12 Arizona State Sun Devils 4-1, Saturday at the Lewis Clark State College Tennis Center.

One highlight for the Cougars (7-10, 0-5 Pacific-10) was the play at No. 1 doubles, as Cougars Chris Martinez and Lorena Arias beat Arizona State's No. 29 Lauren Colalillo and Adria Engel, 8-5. But it was not enough for the No. 42 Cougars as they lost the doubles point.

"We need to get into the habit of winning the doubles point," said WSU Tennis Coach Cari Groce. "It gives us momentum heading into doubles to pull off the upset. It really is hard for us to upset a top 20 team without the doubles point."

In singles action, sophomore Chris Martinez defeated Colalillo, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.

WSU will host No. 7 UCLA (Friday April 11 at noon) and No. 1 USC (Saturday April 12 at noon) next weekend. The matches will probably be played at the Stadium Way Tennis Center, but poor weather could force the matches indoors to Lewiston, Idaho.

Results: No. 12 Arizona State defeats No. 42 Washington State, 4-1.
