Cougar Tennis Comes Up Short At California
March 29, 2003
BERKELEY, Calif.--- The No. 4 California women's tennis team extended its winning streak to 10 with a 7-0 sweep of No. 45 Washington State this afternoon, March 29, at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. Exactly one year ago to the day, a 9-4 Cal squad went into Pullman with an undefeated all-time record against the Cougars and suffered a tough 5-2 loss, setting off a 3-5 stretch to end the regular season. For the fourth consecutive match, Cal's doubles teams claimed victories on all three courts. No. 5 Raquel Kops-Jones and Christina Fusano beat WSU's Lorena Arias and Chris Martinez, 8-3. Cal's Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt won 8-1 over Cougars Orsolya Sallai and Annabel Stefanchuk on court two, while WSU's Nora Gaal and Zsofi Fodor fell to Golden Bears Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch, 8-4, on court No. 3. Singles action wasn't much better for the young Cougars (7-7, 0-3, Pac-10). The Golden Bears (15-2, 3-0, Pac-10) jumped out to first set victories on all six courts and proceeded to sweep Washington State without dropping a set in the match. On court No. 1, the ninth-ranked Kops-Jones squared off against the Cougars' top player, No. 107 Orsolya Sallai. Kops-Jones won 6-0, 6-3. WSU returns to action Saturday, March 30 in a non-conference match-up against No. 23 Fresno State. The match will be played in Berkeley, Calif. RESULTS No. 4 California 7, No. 45 Washington State 0
