New Mexico Slips Past Washington State

HONOLULU, Hawaii-- The No. 49 Washington State tennis team could not hold off the No. 26 New Mexico Lobos in the fifth dual match for the Cougars this season Tuesday in Hawaii.
The Cougars, coming off a 4-3 victory over the No. 23 Oregon Ducks March 13, were unable to post four singles victories as they lost to the Lobos, 4-3.
New Mexico captured the doubles point by putting down the Cougars' first and third doubles teams. Finding success in the No. 2 doubles position was Lorena Arias/Zsofia Fodor who put down New Mexico's nationally-ranked No. 47 Iva Gersic/Maria Ruiz-Fabrega, 8-3.
Cougars Orsolya Sallai/Chris Martinez fell to the No. 20-ranked doubles pair of Maja Kovacek/ Sandy Lukowski, 8-5.
In singles, senior Lorena Arias has been leading the way for the Cougars throughout the season. The Mexico City, Mexico, native posted win number 20 on the season as she knocked off Iva Gersic in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
In the No. 1 position Sallai could not find success against nationally-ranked No. 43 Kovacek as the Cougar lost, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
Junior Nora Gaal also continued her success this season by defeating TiffanyRobertson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot. Cougar junior Martinez beat Lukowski, in No. 4 singles, by a score of, 6-2, 6-1.
"We played really hard as a team," Washington State Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "This was a tough loss for us, but we are ready to bounce back against Hawaii."
The Cougars will face Hawaii Friday, March 19 to conclude spring break competition.
