WSU Tennis Falls To No. 35 Oregon
March 16, 2003
LEWISTON, Idaho- Despite two upset victories over ranked singles opponents, the No. 40 Washington State women's tennis team lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to the No. 35 Oregon Ducks, Sunday.
Oregon won the critical doubles point as WSU was only able to pick up wins in three of the six singles matches. However, at No. 1 singles WSU sophomore Orsolya Sallai led the way for the Cougars with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Oregon's No. 18 Daria Panova. Also making noise for the Cougars was junior Lorena Arias, who upset Oregon's No. 40 Courtney Nagle 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
WSU freshman Annabel Stefanchuk won her No. 5 singles match over Anna Leksinska, 6-4, 6-3.
"There were a lot of ups and downs and it was a gut-wrenching match to lose," said WSU coach Cari Groce. "I was proud of our effort. If we keep going after teams the way we did today we're going to be fine. But we have to get back in the habit of winning the doubles point. It cost us the match today."
The Cougars next competition will be a trip to the Bay Area Pac-10 schools. WSU travels to No. 3 Stanford March 28 and No. 4 California March 29. Both matches start at noon.
No. 35 Oregon defeats No. 40 Washington State, 4-3.
