No. 16 Sun Devils Defeat Cougars, 7-0

Tempe, Ariz. - The Washington State women's tennis team traveled to Tempe, Ariz., to take on Arizona State. The Cougars suffered a tough loss in Pacific-10 play Saturday, when the Sun Devils defeated the Cougars, 7-0, at the Whiteman Tennis Center. The Sun Devils jumped out to the early lead after sweeping the doubles matches, earning the opening point. At the No. 1 position, Ekaterina Kamendova and Elisabeth Fournier battled against Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein. The Arizona State tandem earned the victory over the Washington State teammates, 8-2. Marina Nicolas and Bianca Selaru were defeated by Nadia Abdala and Laila Abdala at the No. 2 position, 8-1. Aleksandra Cekic and Ioana Oprea fought hard in their match against Sianna Simmons and Ashlee Brown, but were unable to come away with the victory as they fell, 8-5, at the No. 3 slot. In singles action, the Sun Devils outlasted the Cougars earning victories at all six singles positions. Kamendova went up against the 3rd-ranked player in the nation, McKenna. The Cougar sophomore suffered a hard fought loss as McKenna ended up winning the match, 6-2, 6-3. At the No. 3 position, Fournier found herself in a tough battled against No. 71 Hein. Fournier forced a three-set match after downing Hein in the first set. Hein battled back to take the second-set evening the match. Fournier and her opponent exchanged points before Hein claimed the third-set and the match, 2-6, 7-6, 10-7. At the No. 1 slot, Nadia Abdala defeated Cekic, 6-1, 6-2. Oprea suffered a tough loss as she was defeated by Laila Abdala, 6-0, 6-1. Nicolas battled against Simmons, but was unable to earn the victory falling, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5. At the No. 6 slot, Brown defeated Selaru, 6-2, 6-0.
The Cougars will return home to take on Boise State, Wednesday March 11, at noon.
