PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Marjolein van de Ven captured her 11th dual match victory of the season as the Washington State women's tennis team defeated the visiting Wyoming Cowgirls, 5-2, Sunday, at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

The Cougars (0-4 Pac-10, 9-6 overall) ended a five-match skid and improved its all-time record against Wyoming (1-0 MWC, 4-5 overall) to 3-0.

The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead after capturing victories in the one and two slots in doubles action. Teammates van de Ven and Amy Toth, playing in the No. 1 slot, eased past Andrea House and Korlina Rowinski, 8-1.

The Cougars secured the doubles point after Aleksandra Cekic and partner Aleksandra Stefanova eclipsed Corina Lazar and Amy Senko, 8-5. It was the tandem's first win of the season and helped the Cougars capture their eighth doubles point of the season.

WSU quickly capitalized on its 1-0 lead, with a straight-set victory in the No. 1 slot. Toth stormed past Sarah Summerfield, 6-1, 6-2 to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. The win improved Toth's career victory total to 72 and moved into a tie in seventh place with Lorena Arias on WSU's all-time wins list.

Stefanova put the Cougars in great position to take the victory by putting the Cougars ahead a 3-0 after a win in the No. 4 slot over Senko, 6-2, 6-4.

WSU's van de Ven clinched the match for WSU in another straight-set victory over Rowinski, 6-2, 6-2. The win increased her team leading overall record to 18-8.

Cekic, playing in the No. 4 slot, increased the margin of victory for WSU with a win over Lazar, 6-2, 6-4. The win put Cekic a game over .500 in her dual match record at 6-5.

The Cowgirls ruined the Cougars' attempt at a sweep with wins in the fifth and sixth positions.

 

 

The Cougars will have a slight break in action before traveling down south to take on Alabama, Wednesday, March 14 at 3 p.m. and South Alabama, Friday, March 16 at 10 a.m.
