Cougars Put Down By No. 14 Fresno State

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The No. 63 Washington State Cougars were defeated by the No. 14 Fresno State Bulldogs, 5-2, in the second round and day two of the UNLV Invitational Women's Tennis Tournament Saturday at Fertitta Tennis Comlex, Las Vegas.

Washington State posted only two wins, both coming in singles. In the No. 4 singles slot Junior Nora Gaal posted win number 11 on the season by knocking off Vlatka Jovanovic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Playing No. 6 singles Cougar Zsofia Fodor captured win number 13 on the season. The Pecs, Hungary, native defeated Fresno State's Courtney Jantz, 6-4, 6-3.

In No. 1 singles Orsolya Sallai fell to nationally-ranked No. 29 Jelena Pandzic, 6-3, 6-1. In the No. 2 slot Lorena Arias suffered her first loss since January 16, against Washington's Erin Hoe. Arias was defeated by Bulldog Lucia Tallo, 6-3, 6-2. The Mexico City, Mexico, native has taken the last 11 of her 13 matches played.

The Cougars could not find success in doubles. Despite the success of Cougar pair Arias/Fodor against Oklahoma State Friday, the new duo fell in No. 2 doubles to Lucia Sainz/Katharina Winterhaller, 8-4. In No. 1 doubles Cougars Sallai/Martinez were knocked off by Pandzic/Tallo, 8-2.

"I'm proud of the effort put forth on every court by each player," Washington State Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "We look to take that same effort into our match tomorrow against UNLV."

The Cougars will Face the No. 37 UNLV Lady Rebels Sunday at 9 a.m. The Lady Rebels were defeated by No. 27 Tulane, 7-0, Saturday.
