Cougar Tennis Takes Both Matches in Doubleheader

The Washington State women's tennis team triumphed 6-1 over both Montana and Lewis-Clark State College Saturday. The Cougars (5-6 overall, 0-1 Pac-10) boasted straight sets wins in all 10 singles victories on the day.
The first match of the day against the Montana Grizzlies was played outdoors at the Stadium Way Tennis Center in Pullman, Wash. The Cougars played their second match at the Lewis-Clark State College Indoor Tennis Center in Lewiston, Idaho.
Against the Grizzlies, the doubles point was clinched by Ekaterina Burduli/Nora Gaal who teamed up at the No. 1 position to put down Annabelle Janeiro/Mari Castello 9-7. The other doubles victory for the Cougars came from Chris Martinez/Amy Toth in the No. 2 slot, they shut out Colby Fannin/Cheyne Ursich 8-0.
In doubles play against the LCSC Warriors, Burduli/Gaal, again in the No. 1 slot, pinned down a win against Jana Puzova/Maria Amelia Resende 8-2. Martinez/Toth took control of Hephzi Segura/Rachel Moorhead and triumphed 8-2.
In singles play against both teams the Cougars dominated. Burduli posted her seventh and eighth wins on the season, both coming in at the No. 1 position. The freshman handed a loss to Janiero, 6-1, 6-0 in the first match and went on to put down the Warrior's Puzova 6-1, 6-2. In the No. 2 position for both matches Martinez sunk Ursich 6-0, 6-0 to capture her eleventh win on the season and she went on to move her total to 12 victories by defeating Resende of LCSC 6-1, 6-0. With the two victories Martinez moved herself into seventh place on the Cougar all-time career singles victories list with 65. Fellow senior Gaal also posted her eleventh and twelfth victories in the on the season by putting down Grizzly Lindsey Torgerson 7-5, 6-0 and Warrior Khaliun Enkhjargal 6-1, 6-2, both in the No. 3 notch. Gaal's 67 career singles victories puts her in sixth place on the all-time list. Toth also came on too strong for her opponents as she beat Montana's Mari Castello 7-6, 6-1 and went on to put down LCSC's Carla Jones 6-2, 6-1. The two triumphs bring Toth's victory total to 14 on the season, leading all Cougars. Cougar newcomer Aleksandra Stefanova captured her second and third wins as a Cougar since joining the team last month. The freshman knocked off Jonna Schwartz of Montana 6-2, 6-1 and went on to defeat LCSC's Rachel Moorhead 6-0, 6-1.
"We are thrilled to get two victories today," Washington State head coach Lisa Hart said. "We're looking forward to a couple of weeks off so we can really work before we get into the rest of our Pac-10 schedule."
The Cougars will be in action next against the southern California schools, USC and UCLA. Washington State will face the Trojans Friday, March 11 at noon and the Bruins Saturday March 12 at noon. Both matches will be in Pullman.
