Cougars Cruise to 7-0 Victory over Portland

PULLMAN, Wash. - The 40th-ranked Washington State Cougars tennis team jumped to a quick lead and never relinquished it, defeating Portland, 7-0, Saturday morning at the Simmelink Tennis Courts in the Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
With the win the cougars improve to 9-2 on the season while the Pilots fall to 4-4. In doubles action, Liudmila Vasilieva and Elizaveta Luzina rolled by Tori Troesch and Valeska Hoath, defeating the Portland pairing, 8-2, at No. 1. At No. 2, Olga Musilovich and Ksenia Googe secured the doubles point, defeating Maja Mladenovic and Anastasia Polyakova, 8-5. Andjela Kankaras and Lize Leenknecht were tied at 6-6 against Sabine Fuchs and Milagros Cubelli when the match was stopped as the doubles point was already decided.
At No. 1 singles, Vasilieva was first to strike for the Cougars, defeating Mladenovic 6-0, 6-3. Luzina quickly followed at No. 4, cruising to a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Saroop Dhatt to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
Kankaras was tested in her match at No. 3. The Cougar senior won the first set in a 7-6 (9-7) tiebreak. After a slow start in the second, Kankaras was able to rally back and win the match 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 over Hoath. The win secured victory for the Cougars, giving them a 4-0 lead. Musilovich had no troubles at the No. 5 spot, easily defeating Polyakova, 6-3, 6-0.
At No. 2, Googe and Fuchs were going back and forth all match. Googe eventually came out on top, defeating Fuchs 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-3), 1-0 (10-5). Dajana Ognjenovic finished off play for the Cougars at No. 6. After dropping the first set, Ognjenovic battled back, defeating Troesch 4-6, 7-6 (14-12), 1-0 (11-9).
The Cougars return to action March 2 when they host Boise State.
