WSU Tennis Loses At Oregon

Feb. 23, 2003

EUGENE, Oregon -- The Washington State tennis team's five match winning streak came to an end as the No. 39 Oregon Ducks beat the Cougars 5-2, Sunday.

The No. 44 Cougars (5-2) won the doubles point behind the No. 45 doubles tandem of Chris Martinez and Lorena Arias. They beat Oregon's Courtney Nagle and Daria Panova 8-4 at No. 1 singles. Cougar sophomores Nora Gaal and Zsofi Fodor took care of business at No. 3 singles with an 8-6 victory over Oregon's Anna Leksinska and Jamie Marshall.

"We played extremely well in doubles," said coach Cari Groce. "We played really well in singles as well. Oregon was hostile territory since they had a lot of loud fans out there to give them an advantage. It could have gone either way and was a hard fought match. Oregon and WSU always have good matches, and it was another good one today. Unfortunately, today we just came up a little short."

Newcomer Annabel Stefanchuk was the lone winner for the Cougars in singles action. Stefanchuk beat Ester Bak 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.

The Cougars host BYU (Friday 2/28 at 1p.m.) and Washington (Sunday 3/2 at 1 p.m.) this weekend. The matches will probably be played indoors at the LCSC tennis center in Lewiston, Idaho.
