WSU Tennis Sunk By No. 1 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 75 Washington State women's tennis came up blank against the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal Friday. The Cardinal, who boasts five ranked singles players and two ranked doubles teams, put the Cougars (3-6, 0-1 Pac-10) away 7-0.

In No. 1 singles, Ekaterina Burduli fell to Amber Liu, 6-4, 6-2. In the No. 2 position Orsolya Sallai was knocked off by No. 12 Alice Barnes, 6-2, 6-3. Chris Martinez was handled by Erin Burdette in No. 3 singles with the final score being 6-0, 6-2 in favor of the Cardinal. Sophomore Amy Toth was taken in two sets by No. 41 Whitney Deason in the No. 4 slot and senior Nora Gaal lost to No. 82 Anne Yelsey, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot.

Doubles proved to be just as difficult for Washington State. Burduli/Gaal were beaten by No. 7 Barnes/Burdette, 8-1, in the No. 1 spot. In No. 2 doubles Martinez/Sallai fell to Liu/Yelsey, 8-1 and rounding out doubles competition in the No. 3 position were Cougars Toth/Aleksandra Stefanova who were put down by No. 41 Deason/Lejla Hodzick, 8-2.

Washington State has one more match on the road trip before they come home. The Cougars will take on the No. 17 Cal Bears tomorrow at noon in Berkeley, Calif.
