PLEASANTON, Calif. - The No. 75 Washington State women's tennis team captured its third team victory on the season by handing a 4-2 loss to the No. 75 Santa Clara Broncos, Thursday at Club Sport in Pleasanton, California. Both teams are tied for the No. 75 position. Singles was played first in the match and doubles play did not finish because the match had to be moved indoors due to inclement weather.

With the triumph, the Cougars moved their all-time record against Santa Clara to 3-1.

Freshman Ekaterina Burduli grabbed her sixth win of the season and fifth win at No. 1 singles by putting down Janalle Kaloi, 6-2, 6-3. In the No. 2 singles position, Senior Orsolya Sallai tallied her tenth win on the season by knocking off Kelly Leathers 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Amy Toth and senior Nora Gaal rounded out the Cougar singles winners. Toth steamed Erika Barnes in the No. 4 position, 6-1, 6-1 and Gaal downed Kim Daniel in the No. 5 slot by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Toth leads the team in singles victories with 12 on the season.

A doubles point was not awarded to either team because the third match was not finished. The Cougars had a little different line-up. In the No. 1 position Burduli/Gaal teamed up and fell to Kaloi/Leathers, 8-6. At the No. 2 slot long-time pair Martinez/Sallai put down Cochrane/Daniel, 8-2.

"We're really proud of the way we competed," Washington State head coach Lisa Hart said. "It feels great to get our first win this season against a ranked opponent."

The Cougars will continue their California trip tomorrow with a match against the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal at 1:30 and then on Saturday, Feb. 19 they will face the No. 17 California Bears at noon.
