Cougars Fall to Undefeated Hokies
Feb. 14, 2004
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The No. 50 ranked Cougars barely missed capturing the doubles point Saturday, as they fell to No. 69 Virginia Tech, 4-3.
Regionally-ranked No. 9 doubles pair Lorena Arias/Chris Martinez were defeated by the nationally-ranked No. 37 duo of Felice Lam/Elissa Kinard, 8-6.
Cougar tandem Amy Toth/Nora Gaal defeated Carolina Rodriguez/Ashley James 8-1.
In the third doubles match Cougars Zsofia Fodor/Nelly Dvornicka fell to Ginger Lowdermilk/Anat Elazari, 8-6.
In singles action Arias captured her fifth straight win in less than a month by defeating Lowdermilk 7-5, 6-3. In doing so, Arias etched her name in the Cougar record books by becoming fifth in all-time singles victories with 65 career wins. Arias has won nine of her last ten matches and is only one win away from matching her 2002-03 win total of 16.
Junior Nora Gaal put down her opponent Ashley James, 6-3, 6-1 to improve her win total to nine on the season and teammate Zsofia Fodor also found success against the Hokies as she knocked off Carolina Rodriguez in the No. 6 singles slot, 6-0, 6-2. Fodor now has 10 wins on the season.
"Nora played so hard in both of her matches, I'm impressed with the way she fought," Washington State Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "I am disappointed with the loss, but we're looking forward to facing Oregon next week."
The Cougars will face the nationally-ranked No. 42 Oregon Ducks in Lewiston Feb. 20 at 10 a.m.
