Doubles Play Strong in 6-1 Victory over Gonzaga

PULLMAN, Wash. -
The Washington State Cougars move to 2-0 on the weekend, defeating the Gonzaga Bulldogs 6-1 Saturday morning at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse. The day began with doubles. At No. 3, Olga Musilovich and Charlotte Koning made quick work of Gonzaga's Isabell Klingert and Franziska Khoeler, defeating the duo 8-1. Liudmila Vasilieva and Elizaveta Luzina clinched the doubles point for the Cougars at No. 1 after defeating Katie Edwards and Kylie Peek of Gonzaga 8-3. Ksenia Googe and Andjela Kankaras were ahead 6-4 over Samantha Polayes and Melanie Yates when their match was stopped. In singles action, Luzina was the first to strike, defeating Polayes 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. Googe finished shortly thereafter at No. 2, cruising past Peek 6-2, 6-2 to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead. After a close first set, Kankaras gained momentum and closed out the second set without dropping a game, defeating Klingert 6-4, 6-0 and securing victory for WSU. At No. 1, Vasilieva defeated Edwards 6-4, 6-1 while Musilovich won her seventh-straight match, defeating Franziska Koehler 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5. Lize Leenknecht concluded play for the Cougars at No. 6, falling to Yates 6-4, 6-3. The Cougars will conclude weekend play at 4 p.m. when they face Eastern Washington.
